Informal workers survey / Katihar / 2026

Four hundred and one workers

What 401 informal workers in Sukhasan and Chitoriya panchayats told us about their work, wages, debt, health and the schemes meant for them. Choose up to two characteristics below and every number on this page switches to that group.

01 / Work and wages

How much work, at what wage

Each box counts people in the selected group by days of work in a month and usual daily wage. In the marigold boxes, even the top of both answers falls short of Rs 11,336: the Bihar minimum wage for unskilled work, Rs 436 a day from 1 April 2026, over 26 days.

02 / Headline measures

Twenty-one measures, one group at a time

The bar is the selected group. The rust line marks all 401 respondents, so you can see at once where a group sits above or below everyone else. Percentages are of those who answered.

From the survey
Seven in ten people holding an Ayushman Bharat benefit told us they do not know whether they have health insurance.

Holding a scheme and knowing what it does are two different things. Across everyone surveyed, only 8 per cent hold a shramik card, though three in four work as farm or construction labourers.

03 / Any question

Look at any question

Pick a question and a way to split the selected group. Each column adds up to 100 per cent, except where people could tick more than one answer.

04 / Benchmarks

How this group compares with the district and the country

The bar is the selected group, recalculated as you filter. The marks are published estimates from other surveys, which are fixed. Definitions differ between sources, so read these as orientation rather than as exact comparisons; the notes under each row say what each benchmark measures.

05 / What survives adjustment

Regression results

These figures do not change with the filters. They come from logistic models fitted on all 401 respondents, holding the other characteristics constant. Each bar is an average marginal effect in percentage points: how much more or less likely the outcome is for that group, with everything else in the model held fixed.

Because respondents are clustered in only nine wards, every claim was re-tested with a wild cluster bootstrap. Results marked robust survive that test at the 5 per cent level. Results marked suggestive do not, which means the design cannot resolve them, not that the difference is absent.
06 / In their own words

What people said when asked openly

Two questions were open: the biggest problem informal workers face, and what they expect from government. Answers were coded by keyword into themes, and one answer can carry several. Bars show the share of answers from the selected group mentioning each theme.
